China Delivered First Self-Developed Largest LNG Ship

On a momentous day in Shanghai, China unveiled its first domestically developed large liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier for international export, signaling a leap forward in its shipbuilding capabilities. This state-of-the-art vessel, equipped with advanced cargo containment technology, not only marks a milestone in China’s engineering prowess but also positions the nation as a strong contender in the high-tech shipbuilding sector.

Constructed by Jiangnan Shipyard, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), this LNG carrier integrates cutting-edge design and engineering excellence to address growing global energy transportation demands. By successfully completing the project two months ahead of schedule, Jiangnan Shipyard has redefined efficiency and quality in the maritime industry. With this breakthrough, China steps onto the global stage as a key player in LNG transportation, challenging foreign dominance and setting new standards in sustainable and efficient shipbuilding.

Breaking New Ground in LNG Transportation

A Technological Leap Forward

China’s LNG carrier is no ordinary vessel. Designed with the latest third-generation membrane containment system, it boasts significant advancements in efficiency and safety. The insulation layer thickness has been reduced from 530mm to 400mm, which increases the vessel’s cargo capacity. This design minimizes cargo evaporation, making it safer and more energy-efficient while meeting stringent international standards.

The vessel epitomizes the internationally prevalent membrane-type LNG cargo hold structure, with four compartments capable of transporting enough LNG to meet a city’s one-month demand in a single trip,” explained Song Bowen, chief construction engineer at Jiangnan Shipyard. Additionally, it has over 10,000 alarm points, designed for a lifespan of 40 years, ensuring maximum safety for this high-risk cargo.

A Win for Energy Efficiency and Sustainability

The new design aligns with global trends toward eco-friendly shipping. By reducing cargo evaporation and maximizing fuel efficiency, the vessel promotes sustainable energy transportation. Jiangnan Shipyard’s ability to deliver this sophisticated carrier within 19 months, ahead of schedule, demonstrates its commitment to innovation and precision engineering.

Challenging Global Dominance

Until now, the construction of LNG carriers has been dominated by foreign shipyards. This delivery changes the game. “With this vessel, China has achieved a zero breakthrough in this field,” said Song. The project showcases China’s ability to innovate and compete in high-tech shipbuilding, enhancing its reputation globally.

The carrier is the first of six 175,000 cubic meters LNG vessels ordered by Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) Logistics & Services in 2022. By fulfilling this order, Jiangnan Shipyard has become China’s first shipbuilder to adopt the advanced Mark III membrane system, a significant achievement in the industry.

Jiangnan Shipyard: A Legacy of Excellence

Pioneering Shipbuilding Since 1865

With a history dating back to 1865, Jiangnan Shipyard is no stranger to innovation. As a subsidiary of CSSC, it has constructed and delivered over 2,800 vessels to date. This latest accomplishment underscores its expertise in combining cutting-edge technology with skilled craftsmanship.

The shipyard’s dedication to quality is evident in the seamless execution of the LNG carrier project. By meeting global standards and addressing specific customer needs, Jiangnan Shipyard has solidified its position as a leader in the maritime industry.

What’s Next? A Future of Innovation

Jiangnan Shipyard isn’t resting on its laurels. With eight orders for this model already in place, the company plans to refine its designs further. “The successful construction of this LNG carrier will facilitate closer cooperation in energy transportation and marine equipment,” Song noted. This marks the beginning of a new era for China’s shipbuilding sector, with more efficient and advanced vessels on the horizon.

Revolutionizing Maritime Trade

As the global demand for LNG continues to grow, Jiangnan Shipyard’s breakthrough offers a glimpse into the future of sustainable and efficient maritime trade. Stay updated on the latest innovations and achievements reshaping the industry.
