TiO2 has long been used in mineral sunscreens for its ability to reflect UV light. However, the standard particles of TiO2 aren’t the right size to achieve a cooling effect. By carefully adjusting the size of these nanoparticles, Zhang and his team created a formulation that reflects both UV rays and solar heat. This adjustment allows the innovative formula to act as a radiative cooler, reducing the skin’s temperature even under intense sunlight.

A Formula That Delivers

This breakthrough formula combines six key ingredients:

  • TiO2 nanoparticles: Tuned for optimal UV and heat reflection.
  • Water and ethanol: Create a lightweight base.
  • Moisturizing cream: Ensures skin hydration.
  • Pigments: Add a skin-friendly tint.
  • Polydimethylsiloxane: A silicone polymer commonly used in cosmetics for its smooth texture and water resistance.

This innovative blend offers multiple benefits:

  • High Sun Protection Factor (SPF): With an SPF of approximately 50, it effectively shields the skin from UV radiation.
  • Cooling Effect: Tests show that it keeps the skin up to 11°F (6°C) cooler than bare skin and around 6°F (3°C) cooler than commercially available sunscreens.
  • Durability: The sunscreen remains effective after 12 hours of simulated sunlight exposure.
  • Skin-Friendly: The product was tested on both human and animal skin without causing irritation.

Field Testing: Real-World Impact

The researchers evaluated the prototype’s performance in a hot and humid outdoor environment. Participants who applied the radiative cooling sunscreen experienced skin temperatures up to 10.8°F (6.0°C) cooler than those with bare skin and up to 11°F (6.1°C) cooler than those using existing sunscreens. Imagine walking outside on a sweltering day and feeling not just protected but also refreshed—this sunscreen makes that possible.

Affordable Innovation

Despite its advanced formulation, the sunscreen is surprisingly cost-effective. Producing 10 grams of the mixture costs only $0.92, making it competitively priced with its counterpart already on the market. The prototype sunscreen’s affordability, coupled with its dual functionality, positions it as a product with immense commercial potential.
