Amprius new EV battery achieves 90% energy in just 15 mins

A leading manufacturer of high-energy and high-power lithium-ion batteries is making waves in the electric vehicle world with a major leap forward in battery technology. This California-based battery manufacturer has just shipped its high-performance SiMaxx A-Sample EV cells to the United States Advanced Battery Consortium (USABC). And it is none other than Amprius Technologies. These cells are designed to tackle some of the toughest challenges facing the EV industry today, like driving range and charging speed.

What’s more, these cells can charge up to 90% of their capacity in just 15 minutes, surpassing the USABC’s target of 80% in the same time frame. With promising early results pointing to a milestone of 1,000 charge cycles, Amprius is well on its way to helping shape the future of EV batteries.

This company has previously delivered quick-charging battery packs for air vehicles. Now, it is marking its footprints in the EV category with its SiMaxx™ A sample EV cells.

Incredible performance of Amprius’ SiMaxx™ A-Sample EV Cells

  • High Energy and Power Density: The A-Sample EV cells deliver an impressive specific energy of 360 Wh/kg at the start of life, far exceeding the USABC program’s target of 275 Wh/kg at the end of life. The cells also provide a power density of 1200 W/kg, which could significantly increase the driving range of electric vehicles compared to current commercial batteries.

  • Fast Charging Capability: These cells charge to 90% of their capacity in just 15 minutes, surpassing the USABC target of 80% in the same time frame. This rapid charging feature addresses one of the most common concerns of EV users.
  • Long-Term Durability: Initial testing by this industry-leading lithium-ion batter manufacturer shows promising results, with the company targeting 1,000 charge cycles, making these cells a durable option for long-term use in electric vehicles.

Amprius’ Strategic Milestone and Partnership with USABC

This shipment of A-Sample cells marks the completion of a $3 million technology development contract with USABC, which was awarded to Amprius in 2022. This contract focused on creating a low-cost, fast-charging silicon nanowire battery. The successful delivery of these cells positions this company to begin further testing and evaluation with automotive manufacturers, moving closer to scaling production for the electric vehicle market.

Amprius’ Vision for the Future of Electric Mobility

Amprius CEO, Dr. Kang Sun, expressed excitement about the progress made and the upcoming validation of the A-Sample EV cell’s performance. He emphasized that his organization is well-positioned to serve various electric mobility markets with its cutting-edge batteries, which offer superior energy and power performance, fast charging, a wide operating temperature range, and enhanced safety features. This advancement aligns with Amprius’ goal of revolutionizing the EV sector and expanding into other electric mobility segments.

Partnership with the Automotive Industry and Future Plans

Amprius has been actively engaging with multiple automotive OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) and has a longstanding collaboration with USABC. The company is optimistic that the successful delivery of the A-Sample EV cells will open doors for additional sampling and evaluations by leading automotive manufacturers. This would help them leading to the large-scale adoption of its high-performance batteries.

Paving the Way for the Future of EV Batteries

Amprius Technologies is making significant strides in the development of advanced EV batteries, with its SiMaxx. A-Sample EV cells demonstrate superior energy density, fast charging, and long-term durability, and it is poised to play a crucial role in the electric vehicle industry’s future. As the company continues to scale its technology and collaborate with key industry players, its innovative battery solutions will likely transform the EV market, bringing us closer to a more efficient and sustainable electric future.
