The Global Auto Expo 2025 is a feast for automobile enthusiasts, showcasing the latest and most innovative vehicles. While electric two and four-wheelers dominate the event, India’s two-wheeler manufacturers have brought an exciting moment. For the first time, CNG-powered two-wheelers are competing for attention, offering a glimpse into a more cost-effective and eco-friendly future of mobility. Among the stars are TVS Jupiter CNG and Bajaj Freedom 125, two revolutionary vehicles that demonstrate India’s engineering prowess.

A Game-Changing Concept: TVS Jupiter CNG

Not to be outdone, TVS Motor Company showcased the TVS Jupiter CNG concept at the Auto Expo 2025. As the world’s first CNG-powered scooter, it builds on the success of the Jupiter 125, which has sold over 7 million units since its launch in September 2013.

The Jupiter CNG mirrors the visual design of the gasoline-powered Jupiter 125, but its innovation hides under the seat. A CNG cylinder, holding 1.4 kilograms of gas, powers the scooter to travel an impressive 226 kilometers when using both gasoline and CNG.

While it sacrifices the 33-liter under-seat storage of its gasoline sibling, the Jupiter CNG compensates with features like a digi-analog display, USB charging, and start/stop technology. It is powered by a 124.8cc single-cylinder engine that produces 7.2 horsepower and 9.4 Nm of torque. The scooter can reach a top speed of 80.5 kph, making it a practical choice for urban commutes.

A Vision for the Future

TVS has not announced a launch date for the Jupiter CNG yet, as the company is assessing market demand. However, its launch is expected to reinforce TVS’s position as a leader in eco-friendly mobility.

The World’s First CNG Motorbike: Bajaj Freedom 125

Bajaj Auto unveiled the Bajaj Freedom 125 in July 2024, marking a milestone as the world’s first CNG-powered motorcycle. This groundbreaking motorbike offers exceptional value for environmentally conscious riders.

The Freedom 125 is powered by an air-cooled 125cc single-cylinder engine that delivers 9.5 horsepower and 9.7 Nm of torque. It can reach a top speed of 90.5 kph on CNG and 93.4 kph on gasoline, offering flexibility to riders. What truly sets it apart is its incredible fuel efficiency. Bajaj claims that the bike can reduce running costs by up to 50%, bringing them down to just Rs 1 per kilometer.

The CNG tank, with a capacity of 2 kilograms, provides a range of over 200 kilometers, while the 2-liter gasoline tank adds another 130 kilometers. Together, riders get an impressive combined range of 330 kilometers. In real-world testing by Autocar India, the Freedom 125 achieved 94 km/kg in the city and 126 km/kg on highways when using CNG.

Environmentally Friendly

In terms of emissions, the Freedom 125 stands out. Compared to gasoline-powered motorcycles, it produces 43% less NOx (nitrogen oxide), 85% less NMHCs (non-methane hydrocarbons), and 26.7% less CO2, making it a cleaner alternative.

Safety has been a top priority for Bajaj, and the Freedom 125 has passed 11 rigorous safety tests, including truck run-over and impact tests. This commitment to innovation and safety earned it the Autocar Bike of the Year 2025 award.

Why CNG Two-Wheelers Matter

CNG-powered two-wheelers like the Bajaj Freedom 125 and TVS Jupiter CNG represent a significant step toward sustainable mobility in India. Here’s why they matter:

  1. Affordability: With running costs as low as Rs 1 per kilometer, these vehicles offer a cost-effective solution for daily commutes.
  2. Eco-Friendliness: Reduced emissions make them an excellent choice for combating air pollution.
  3. Innovation: These vehicles highlight India’s ability to innovate and set global benchmarks in mobility.
  4. Safety: Rigorous testing ensures a secure riding experience.

The Road Ahead

The introduction of CNG-powered two-wheelers at the Auto Expo 2025 signals a shift in how we view mobility. While Bajaj Freedom 125 has already made its mark with over 40,000 units sold, the TVS Jupiter CNG concept promises to add more options for consumers looking for affordable and eco-friendly alternatives.

With India’s rising focus on sustainability, the success of these vehicles could pave the way for more innovation in the two-wheeler segment. As manufacturers continue to invest in research and development, the future looks bright for green mobility solutions in Bharat.
